Ways to save and sample!

This blog is going to be short and sweet, because hey… we all like it when people get to the point, right?

Some women or men dedicate their lives to helping people save money and this lady is faithful in updating her blog on free samples, money-saving coupons, etc. I’m typically after all of the beauty items, but if something is free… hey! I guess I’ll request some random cat food for my cats LOL! I’m sure there are other blogs out there similar to this, but this is what I found. Your best bet is checking these type of blogs early in the day, most giveaways are only for a specific amount of the first few people to enter. For example “The first 100,000“.

Like pages!!! This is your gateway into entering contests, getting free samples, and sometimes getting coupons. Sites that are known for having a lot of contests are: BH Cosmetics, Baghaus, Urban Decay, Target, and Smashbox.

Okay, here’s why I like to shop online:

  1. Free samples
  2. Codes for EXTRA free samples (Ulta and Sephora are absolute dolls for having this)
  3. http://www.retailmenot.com is a great website for getting those extra codes the sites don’t tell you about :)! Do your research and it will pay off!
This is the harder one to do because you’re most likely going to a face a lady behind a counter who thinks she knows it all about makeup and won’t stop hovering your shoulder until you buy something. However, if you’re wanting to try out free samples of foundation, perfume, eyeshadow, primer, etc. they will usually give you a little pot of it to try out. They shouldn’t give you an attitude, but if they do, make sure you point out that you’re not going to pay $50 for a product you have no idea about. If they want to make a profit, they’re going to give you that sample.

Hautelook – You need to fill out a simple registration (name, e-mail, etc.) so you can be ‘special’ to view their deals. They have some really awesome events, last week they just had one on Urban Decay products… so keep your eye on the brands they’re discounting.

BeFlurt – They have everything from Nars, Mac, and NYX products that go on sale. I’ve seen MAC shadows that were originally $15.00 drop down to $11.00, it’s not that big of a difference… BUT hey, it adds up! You can justify yourself on spending a lot on a single eyeshadow haha.

Spending a ton of money on makeup makes me cringe, I almost cried when I spent $25 on a Lorac blush. I splurged though since it was my birthday :).

Make sure you always look at the sale or clearance section, it’s the best way to try out makeup. Urban Decay is the best for their clearance section by far. I spent $29 on the Book of Shadows IV when it was originally $64.

If you have a smart phone and an app. market, you’ll most likely find the Coupon App. This is a great little go-to when you’re looking for the cheapest gas prices in your area, links to free samples, birthday freebies, and store sales (ex. Bath and Body Works).

To find out more about it: http://www.thecouponsapp.com/

Ulta and Sephora are the best places to shop for makeup because you can accumulate points and get freebies.

Sephora goes by a points system, so when you spend $1 at Sephora that equals one point. Get 100 points and you can get a deluxe sample of a high-end product. The rewards prizes are always changing, so if you don’t like what they’re giving away that month, just save your points. They also have 300 points and 500 points rewards as well (they’re obviously the nicer bigger better items).

Don’t forget to stop by your local Sephora or shop online for your birthday, they’ll give you a free gift.

Ulta’s points perks is something I’m trying to figure out, but they’re good for sending coupons if you’re a regular shopper. Also, I just received their magazine (which is free) today in the mail and since I spent X amount of money there, I qualify for a certain level of rewards. I got level 3, so I can pick from the Ulta products… I’m going for their gel liner :)!

I suggest buying from Ulta over a drugstore because not only do you reap the reward perks, you  can also catch amazing buy 1 get one 1/2 off deals or buy 2 get 1 free. Plus they have a larger selection of makeup (drugstore and high-end). You get the best of both worlds.

I hope you guys found this blog useful and that it saves you some money. Good luck with the samples! Comment, subscribe, or share :)!

L’Oreal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner VS. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Pencil

I don’t know about you, but I find it super exciting when I can find a drugstore product dupe (something that can be substituted for something else) compared to a high-end product. When you can save a buck, why not do it?! Who cares about brand names when you can have more cash in your pocket at the end of the day? I think any woman can appreciate that!

I know I just did a blog on eyeliners, but this lovely liner right here is going to have to be added to the list and that’s the L’Oreal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner in Carbon Black. I’ll do a blog on updated products that I love maybe once a year if not sooner (depending on how many products I fall in and out of love with LOL!)

L’Oreal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner

Price: $8.49

Where to buy: Ulta ; any drugstore

This comes in 4 colors: Carbon Black, Black, Gray, and Brown. I have mine in the color Carbon Black and oh my goodness is this extremely pigmented! It’s the blackest eyeliner I’ve ever seen. It glides on just as good as the Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner if not better and that’s no joke! The staying power is awesome too, I’ve had mine on since 2PM this afternoon and it’s 8PM now and it is still perfectly in place. The only place it’s wearing off is the outer corner of my lower waterline is (which is no big deal). There’s no such thing as a perfect eyeliner, but this baby comes close!! My eyes have been watering crazy like all day… so it’s holding up phenomenally in my opinion.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Pencil

Price: $19.00

Where to buy: Urban Decay ; Ulta ; Sephora ; Macy’s

This eyeliner comes in 24 different colors and I have mine in the color Zero which is a soft matte black. Perversion from UD, however, is the dupe I’m comparing the L’Oreal eyeliner to. It is supposed to be a dark deep intense black as well. This is a great eyeliner, but the price…? Really? I’m saving $11 with the drugstore brand and I’m NOT trading the quality either.

I’m going to give you the ‘technical’ pros and cons about each product and you can decide for yourself which buy would be best for you.

L’Oreal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner

PROS: Color intensity ; easy to glide on (even over eyeshadows) ; long wearing ; great price ; drys fast

CONS: Not a large color selection ; drys fast – this is here again because some girls actually like to smudge out their eyeliner… you can with this product, you just need to work with it fast

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Pencil

PROS: Large color selection ; easy to glide on… hence the name lol (even over eyeshadows) ; long wearing ; doesn’t dry fast, which is perfect for a great smudged liner look

CONS: Pricey ; doesn’t dry fast – again, this is here because some people would like their eyeliners to set quickly because they prefer a more clean look… and not smudgy

Well, take your pick! I hope this blog has helped anyone who has been considering buying either or product. I hope you’re all having a blessed evening and feel free to comment, subscribe, and share this post!

Bye my lovelies,

Ashley ❤

Eye primers and bases.

Eye primers are intended to make your eyeshadow more vibrant (meaning the colors will intensify) and last longer! If you don’t believe me, I’ve got pictures to prove it! It’s amazing what a primer or base can do for your eyeshadows… especially the less pigmented ones (which are typically the drugstore kind). Just think of it as painting a wall in your house, you need a  base or ‘primer’ to make your actual paint stand out.

Has this ever happened to you? You’ve done your eye makeup and a few hours later… yuck! Your eyeshadow has lines and your skin is now visible again? This is called creasing and it is not pretty! The oils in our faces can break apart the makeup we put on it unless we use a primer to prevent streaking, spotting, or fading. Typically, eyeshadow will do this in the crease of your eye (wherever your eye folds)… hence the term ‘creasing’ haha. Some people don’t have a crease, that’s another blog another day. Any ways, see why primers are necessary now? Don’t worry though… you do NOT need to spend a fortune on a primer. Just because the word ‘primer’ sounds fancy, does not mean it needs to be expensive.

Urban Decay: EyeShadow Primer Potion

Price: $20.00

Where to buy? Urban Decay ; Sephora ; Ulta ; E-bay

As you can see these primers come in 4 different colors, I have the Original formula that dries clear. If you’re needing coverage, the color Eden has a matte nude finish. So for you, that means if you have any discoloration, veins, etc. it will cover it like a concealer. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Urban Decay primers, but they’re tricky to work with at first. The product is not bad in and of itself, it’s how you apply it that sucks haha. I hate being particular about something, so I prefer makeup that’s effortless.

How to apply – This works best on its own (meaning do not put
foundation or concealer on your eyelids). I usually do a full face of foundation (even on my eyelids) and I defeat the purpose of using this primer because it just makes it crease. You should only use a tiny morsel of this product because too much of it can be a bad thing. They have this same primer in ‘bottles’  also, but you will get more product in these squeeze tubes… plus it’s more sanitary! Just put a small dot of it on the tip of your finger and rub the product in.

Elf: Mineral Eyeshadow Primer

Price: $3.00

Where to buy? Elf ; Target

You can’t beat the price for this product, I think it works just as good as the Urban Decay primer… if not better! This comes in 2 colors, Sheer (which I have) and Blush. Sheer has a matte nude finish to it, so just like the UD Primer in Eden… if you have any veins or discoloration, this will give your eye a wash of color and even it out. Blush has a more cool pink tone to it, so if you have cool colored skin (more on the pink/red side) this would work best for you.

How to apply – It has a felt tip applicator which you can apply directly to your eyelid. However. if you are concerned about germs you could always touch the tip of the applicator with a CLEAN finger and rub it onto your eyelid instead. If you’re wanting to use a brush (for whatever reason) apply the product to the back of your hand and take your favorite brush and applicate from there.

**PRIMER TIP # 1** With any primer or base, you only need a thin layer of the product to have it work. Don’t get primer happy! LOL!

MAC Paint Pot

Price: $17.50

Where to buy? MAC  ; Macy’s  ; E-bay

This comes in 9 different shades. I have mine in the color Painterly, it’s a matte nude color.  Although the price for this product can seem frightening, you really do get what you pay for. It’s 0.17 fl oz of product, so this sucker will last you quite awhile. I’ve had mine for almost over a year and I’m not even half way through it. By the time you keep replacing cheapy primers, you’re going to be spending the same amount of money and not get as good of quality. This is my absolute favorite primer because your eyeshadow will not even budge!

How to apply – With CLEAN fingers, gently rub the product until enough transfers onto your finger so that you can apply it to your eye. The heat from your fingers will make it easier to pick up the product. You can use a brush if you prefer, but I like using my fingers. Brushes will allow you to have better control over the product (where it is being placed) and it is more sanitary.

Maybelline: Eye Studio Color Tattoo Eyeshadow

Price: $6.99

Where to buy? Ulta ; any drugstore

These come in 10 different colors. I have mine in Audacious Asphalt (it’s a dark shimmery gray). These cream shadows are said to be compared to the MAC Paint Pots because they are so long-lasting. This girl right here can agree to that! I love these and they are way less expensive too!

How to apply – Unless you get this in the color white, this eyeshadow primer should only be applied to the lid of your eye. If you want a more sheer (very little color) application, continue rubbing the product until it lightens to your liking. This product is really creamy like the MAC Paint Pot, so it’s your choice in whether you want to apply this with a clean finger or a good blending brush like the MAC 217 Blending Brush.

**PRIMER TIP #2** Just because most primers come in nude colors (flesh tone of a white female) does not mean they’re  limited to just them. It doesn’t matter what your skin tone is unless you’re wearing a very natural eye to where your eyeshadow won’t really cover the primer. It should not be noticeable that you are wearing the primer in other words… It’s just there to help, not to stand out.

MAC 217 Blending Brush

Price: $22.50

Where to buy? MAC  ; Macy’s  ; E-bay

Although I hate the price… nothing compares to how great it makes your eyeshadow look! It’s an investment :]!

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Gel Creamliner (Brown Eyes)

Price: $10.99

Where to buy? Ulta ; any drugstore

Okay, so I don’t have brown eyes… but I love the colors in this little trio. I would say the price sucks, but you are getting 3 different gel eyeliners. If you’re not brave when it comes to wearing bright-colored eyeliners, use the liner as a base for your shadows! I don’t care to wear crazy colors, but the purple for example would be beautiful to create that purplely undertone to your shadow. I applied a black eyeshadow on top of it and it gave it a little somethin’ somethin’ ;]!

How to apply – Since this is a gel creamliner, it is extremely concentrated in color so you only need a little. The pots to these liners are small, so you’re going to need a q-tip or brush to retrieve the product.

**PRIMER TIP # 3**  When using your fingers to apply primer, try using your ring finger instead of your index. It it said that it is the most ‘gentle’. Our eyes are sensitive, so don’t be rough with them!

Elf Essential Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil

Price: $1.00

Where to buy? Elf ; Target

Creamy and affordable pretty much sums up this eyeliner. When you’re working with an eyeliner as your ‘eye base’ you need something creamy that isn’t going to pull on your eyelids. You are going to hurt yourself and cause unwanted wrinkles overtime from all of the extra tugging if you do not use a creamy formula. A bonus to this affordable eyeliner is that the cap has a sharpener on it. Ha, talk about convenient!

How to apply – You can apply this baby directly to your eye, just be gentle and color in like you would with a crayon. If you want a sheer application, just take a clean finger or blending brush to soften it.

**PRIMER TIP # 4** Always let the primer sit for a good 30 seconds before you start applying the eyeshadow, otherwise it can look cakey (spotted) in some areas and not good!

Down below are swatches of the products I listed and what they look like with that particular primer. I used the Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Quad in the Amethyst Smokes and their black color in the palette for the example, enjoy!!!

411: Eyeliners!

This can be a scary topic for most girls because finding the perfect eyeliner isn’t easy and can be discouraging when you have an eyeliner meltdown! I’m going to show you the different types of eyeliners I use, how to use them, how much each product  costs, and where to get them. I hope this helps! Comment below if you have any questions or comments.

Probably the most commonly used eyeliner out there are eyeliner pencils. The problem that most girls have with these eyeliners is that they ‘melt’ or wear off. The heat from our body (face) melts the oils in the product and before you know it… raccoon eyes! Just like with any creamy makeup product, you need to set it with a powder. If you are using a black eyeliner, apply a black eye shadow on top to prevent meltage. Is that a word? It is now! Same thing goes for a brown eyeliner, apply a brown eye shadow on top of it. Your eyeliner will last longer and you won’t have to reapply it a bazillion times a day. My favorites right now are…

Urban Decay:24/7 Pencil Eyeliner

Price: $19.00

Where to buy? Urban Decay ; Ulta ; Sephora  ; E-bay

The price for this product isn’t exactly ‘budget friendly‘, but these are the most creamy and long lasting pencils I have ever used!  The great thing about Urban Decay is their color selection! I use their black liner in the color Zero. It’s a soft black, but if you’re looking for the blackest of black they have a new one in Perversion. Any time I buy UD products I make sure they’re on sale. Most of their smaller eye shadow palettes come with mini eyeliners… so HELLO freebie ;]!

Rimmel London: Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil

Price: $3.19

Where to buy? Ulta ; E-Bay ; any drugstore.

You can’t  beat the price for this eyeliner! I have the colors Jet Black and Sable Brown. Rimmel London has a very natural selection of colors besides a blue, green, and a purple shade. It applies smoother than most drugstore eyeliners I’ve used and the staying power is pretty awesome as well.

**TIP** If you are having problems getting your eyeliner to glide on, heat it with a hair dryer for 3-5 seconds. Using a lighter will also do the trick, just hold the tip of the pencil  close to the flame for 3-5 seconds. To make sure you don’t burn your eyelid, gently touch the tip of the pencil to see if the product is NOT melted. This will indicate it’s cool enough, yet warm enough to use (if that makes sense) I’d advise using the hair dryer though seeing as it’s safest. I don’t want anyone to burn their house down! lol

Gel eyeliner is by far my favorite because it is so easy to work with and it has the best staying power! It is great for trying to achieve the perfect winged eyeliner or ‘cat eye’ because the product  is so smooth. To get that precise line, I like using the Sonia Kashuk Bent Eyeliner Brush or the Sigma E65 Brush which is listed below.

Maybelline: Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner

Price: $9.99

Where to buy? Ulta ; E-Bay ; any drugstore.

This is hands down my favorite eyeliner of life, I have accidentally fallen asleep with this on and I wake up with it still being perfect. That my friends is TRUE staying power haha! Your waterline is the worst place for your eyeliner to wear off, so this is your best bet if you can’t always touch up your eyeliner through out the day. I have mine in Blackest Black. If you don’t have a brush, no worries… this comes with one!

Sonia Kashuk: Bent Eyeliner Brush

Price: $5.99

Where to buy?: Target ; Makeup Geek ; E-bay

Sigma: Small Angle E65 Brush

Price: $9.oo

Where to buy: Sigma Beauty ; E-bay

Liquid Eyeliner is probably the trickiest when it comes to applying it because it dries so fast. You need a steady hand, not only to create a clean precise look, but if you get it in your eyes… OUCH! I’ve had my whole eyeball turn black because I had an oopsie haha. It won’t kill you, I promise, it just stings horribly. I gotta warn a sister, right?! Most liquid liners that I have tried will crumble or is SO watery that the color doesn’t even apply. So far these are my favorites…

Urban Decay: 24/7 Liquid Eyeliner

Price: $19.00

Where to buy?  Urban Decay ; Ulta ; Sephora  ; E-bay

I’ve tried my fair share of liquid eyeliners and although I don’t care too much for the price, I’d say it is worth it if you’re wanting to invest in a good liquid eyeliner. I have mine in the color Perversion. As you can see it has a thin brush applicator which is good for making thin lines. This liner has a dark glossy finish to it, so if you’re into matte finishes, this may not be your love. The lasting power of this UD liquid eyeliner is not all day as it claims, but it does last the majority of the day!

Almay: Liquid Liner

Price: $6.99

Where to buy? Ulta ; E-Bay ; any drugstore.

Precise Black is a true deep dark black like the UD 24/7 liquid liner except this has a matte finish. This has a felt-tip applicator and can be a bit on the thick side if you don’t take your time with it. I personally like my eyeliner on the thicker side ;]. I’m a little iffy on the lasting power of this eyeliner, but it’s a cheaper alternative… plus it would be great for going over false eyelashes in covering the lash glue.

This last category probably doesn’t make any sense to you, but the biggest thing I’d like to emphasize is that makeup is not one dimensional. Eye shadow can be used as an alternative if you’re looking for a softer look. Some people don’t like the harshness that eyeliner usually gives, so if you’ve got an angled eye brush or whatever your favorite brush is… you’re set!

MAC: Single Eye Shadow in Carbon

Price: $15.00

Where to buy? MAC ; E-bay

This is obviously a tad expensive, but if it is going to substitute your eyeliner, it will be worth the money you paid for it. It would also be a great for going over pencil eyeliner as well. I only suggest this because it is such a popular true black eye shadow. MAC is known for their quality pigments.

Wet n Wild: Color Icon Palette in Greed

Price: $4.99

Where to buy?  E-Bay ; Drugstore Website ; any drugstore.

Any of the Wet N Wild palettes that have black in them are great, especially this palette because it has both a matte and shimmer black. Wet n Wild is one of the rare drugstore eye shadows that actually has good pigmentation. You just can’t beat the price.

I hope you guys enjoyed this blog and learned something. Every product listed besides the MAC Carbon eye shadow is all products that I have used… so every opinion I have about them is from my own personal experience.
